Luke 23: 33-34

When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left. [Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."]

Reflection

Bishop Joel Konzen | Auxiliary Bishop of Atlanta

The means used to bring about Jesus’ death may strike us as unusually crude or primitive, but then we must ask, “What method of putting someone else to death is acceptable? What instrument or potion is not at odds with everything we know about human dignity and the affirmation of the gift of life?” The public brutality of the cross was, in its day, not unlike a lynching in the 20th-century or the application of pharmacy or chemistry in our own time.

Tree of sorrow and salvation, in your stark challenge show us who stand wordless at your feet to honor all life—so beautiful, so tenuous, so beneficent.
