Prayer for Healing
by Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ
God of compassion,
You let your rain fall on the just and unjust.
Expand and deepen our hearts so that we may love as you love,
even those among us who have caused the greatest pain by taking life.
For there is in our land a great cry for vengeance,
As we fill up death rows and kill the killers in the name of justice, in the name of peace.
Jesus, our brother, you suffered execution at the hands of the state,
But you did not let hatred overcome you.
Help us to reach out to victims of violence so that our enduring love may help them heal.
Holy Spirit of God, You strengthen us in the struggle for justice.
Help us to work tirelessly for the abolition of state -sanctioned death
and to renew our society in its very heart
so that violence will be no more.
Amen.

It is often said that "what is prayed is what is believed" -- meaning that the content of our sincerest prayers communicates the way we see ourselves, God, and the world in which we live. The prayers in the Roman Missal cover a wide range of needs and experiences. In the Mass for the Preservation of Justice and Peace, the collect (opening prayer) communicates something we often hear chanted in the streets after an injustice is committed: no justice; no peace. Every time I employ the Mass for the Preservation of Justice and Peace during the celebration of the Eucharist, I am affirmed in knowing that the peace we seek requires the manifestation of justice for all people.

No Justice | No Peace
Collect from Mass for the Preservation of Justice and Peace
O God, who have revealed that peacemakers are to be called your children,
grant, we pray, that we may work without ceasing
to establish that justice which alone ensures true and lasting peace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Do More
by William Arthur Ward
Do more than belong; participate.
Do more than care; help.
Do more than believe; practice.
Do more than be fair; be kind.
Do more than forgive; forget.
Do more than dream; work.
Do more than teach; inspire.
Do more than earn; enrich.
Do more than give; serve.
Do more than live; grow.
Do more than suffer; triumph.

What If 2020 Isn't Cancelled?
by Leslie Dwight
What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for?
A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw — that it finally forces us to grow.
A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us from our ignorant slumber.
A year we finally accept the need for change.
Declare change. Work for change. Become the change.
A year we finally band together, instead of
pushing each other further apart.
2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather,
the most important year of them all.
